Art Therapy

When you look at the images above or to your left how do they make you feel? Comfort? Joy? Creating from within clients know exactly what they need or and that which needs to be expressed. The act of moving the color across the paper or using your hands to create can soothe and regulate your nervous system. The therapeutic relationship is omnipotent and art is a helpful tool in accessing your inner feelings and helping us to communicate about them. Utilizing materials such as pens or pencils, water colors, or collage, oil or soft pastels, found objects, can create an image intuitively to communicate deeply. You always choose what is best for yourself.

Group Art Therapy

In group art therapy healing is possible in a more expansive container. Clients work individually or in pairs depending upon the vibe of the day. Individually in a collective space the energy in the room inspires. Each person tuning into themselves to discover what is here now. In pair work, collaboration is key. What do we want to create and share. We come together and share our creations, speak about our process, what inspired us, what touched us. Everyone benefits from all of the intimate sharing and learning. The group becomes more coherent. Healing occurs.

What is art therapy? Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

Art therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change (American Art Therapy Association).
